Take Your Dog To Work Day was first started in 1999 created by Pet Sitters International to celebrate the great companions dogs make.  June 26 2009, businesses, animal shelters, and pet-care professionals will work to raise money for shelter dogs.

This is the one and only day you can actually bring your Poo to work with you, how fun.  You must make sure your business is registered and on their website they list the top 10 things to say to convince your boss to take part:

10. The squirrels in the neighborhood deserve a break.
9. Wagging tails work great when the a/c is on the fritz.
8. With a dog as your passenger, you’ll be able to use the car pool lane.
7. It’s a great way to lick the work day blahs!
6. My dog thinks you’re grrrrrrreat!
5. Meetings end as soon as Rover starts staring at the conference room door.
4. You can blame those missing reports on one of your employees’ dogs.
3. It’s the leash you can do.
2. Finally, someone at your office will actually be working like a dog.
AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON TO TAKE YOUR DOG TO WORK…
1. Friday, June 26, is Take Your Dog To Work Day®!

I will hopefully be employed somewhere where I can take part this year!

Looking for a bakery in Baltimore? A homemade dog treat bakery?

Lucky Lucy’s Canine Café is located at 1126 South Charles Street, in historic Federal Hill.shapeimage_2

Lucky Lucy’s is a gourmet, dog and cat bakery that specializes and continues to carry on the tradition of baking homemade treats on the property.

Lucky Lucy’s is not only a bakery but a pet boutique that carries designer leashes, collars, and other accessories for not only your dog but your feline friend as well.

I would most definitely encourage you to stop by the last Saturday of every month and meet an adoptee from the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter.

Lucky Lucy’s also participates in many local fundraisers and March for the Animals is the next upcoming event on Sunday April 19th at Druid Hill Park for the Maryland SPCA.

I am really looking forward to the event this Sunday and I hope my schedule works out so Otto and I can participate in some of the fun.

Don’t Make This Mistake *Part Two

Impulsive adoptions/purchases

Last week I mentioned an article from the Today Show with the top most common mistakes pet owners make and the first tip was to not assume your pet is a person in fur clothing.

This weeks mistake not to make is don’t make an impulsive adoption or purchase of a pet.  Deciding on having a pet join your family is very important and requires a lot of thought and research.

The author Andrea Arden stated,

“Carefully consider the commitment of time and money, and if this particular animal’s size, age, temperament and activity level are a good match for your family.”

Pets require a lot of responsibility so it’s best to consider your options before you bring one home on a whim.

Pupforum is a great site if you are looking to adopt or rescue a dog in Maryland.

After a little Facebook “stalking” I found Raven and Toby.  Jenna Sunday is a 2008 graduate of Towson University and their fur mommy.

Where did you get your new additions?

Jenna: We got our dogs from two different breeders we found on www.puppyfind.com. One was in Arkansas and one was in Missiouri, and they both flew in on a plane and we picked them up at BWI.

Why Yorkie Poo’s?

Jenna: We chose Yorkie poos because my little sister is scared of big dogs so we wanted something small and non-shedding and we also heard that Yorkie poos are really smart and easy to train. Which they have been so far!

I definitely have to agree!

Any other dogs? Do they get along?

Jenna: We don’t have any other dogs, but the two Yorkie poos get along well together.

Any advice?

Jenna: The advice I would give would to be to take lots of pictures because they grow and change SO fast! We’ve only had them for two weeks and now looking back at pictures when we first got them they look different already. And our boy Yorkie Poo has already changed colors a little bit.

Raven & Toby!

A few weeks ago, I expressed my feelings as to what dog the Obama’s should get for the White House.

Dun, Dun, Dun… FOXNews.com published an article on Wednesday the 25th, stating the Obamas are choosing to adopt a Portuguese Water dog, as told to People Magazine.

Portuguese Water dogs are a medium sized dog, similar to  poodles, and have become popular more recently because they do not shed.

The first family has yet to decide on a name for their new best friend but one option mentioned was Frank.

Here is what Otto would look like on the lawn of the White House! (in a bumble bee costume of course)

Are you interested in getting a puppy? Okay, Okay I know.  Most people will tell you to go adopt one (even I would encourage it.)  But my family has always gotten dogs from breeders.

My dalmatian was from upstate New York.  My black lab was from Tennessee.  My yellow lab was from south Jersey.

Otto is from York Road!

It was five days before Christmas and my boyfriend at the time, took me to run some errands.  He pulled into the Just Puppies parking lot, took me inside, and told me to pick whatever I wanted!  (He underlying reasoning came out a few months later as I watched a big white bus take him to an airport and to Iraq for over half a year.  I guess he knew I needed a friend.)

I would still encourage you to adopt a dog from a shelter, but if you are interested in a great dog from a pet store I would by far recommend Just Puppies over any pet store in the mall.  They even give a military discount.  Apparently a lot of military guys buy their gals puppies first, then engagement rings.  At least that’s how it happened for us!

Here is Otto the day we got him!

So which dog will join the Obamas in the White House?

The Buzz Log on Yahoo compiled the dog trends in terms of the most searched on the web.  Although the Yorkie poo wasn’t one of the most searched the breed were noted as one of the mixed breeds with very much web appeal.

If I could just make a suggestion to the Obamas I would go ahead and say get a Yorkie poo.

They are a wonderful mix of Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle.  They are hypoallergenic and non-shedding.  They have the perfect personality mix of playful yet calm.  And they are smarter than pure breed Yorkies (Poodles are known as one of the most intelligent breeds.)

And to end my post to persuade the masses to get a Yorkie poo, another wonderful photo of Otto himself.
