Just drop them off at Dogtopia and you can watch through live webcam feeds all day.hp-doyouknow

Dogtopia is located all over the country but the location in the Maryland area is located in Clarksville.  During Dog Daycare at Dogtopia, your pup will be placed in a play group that is appropriate for their size and temperment.

They also offer overnight stays and a dog spa which provides many services such as shampooing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning.  If you never get the opportunity to treat your pet to a stay at Dogtopia, you can always shop for them in the boutique.

At the boutique there toys, grooming supplies, food, and treats and of course — clothes to dress your best friend up in.

Hopefully Otto and I can make a trip there, but only if he’s a good boy this week.

One of the benefits of having a small dog like a Poo, is you have more of an opportunity to dress up your pooch. There are many boutiques in the area that offer many different items to spoil your dog from clothes to toys and necessities like birthday and party items!

Look at this cake from The Pretentious Pooch!

The Pretentious Pooch is a boutique located on Cathedral Street in Baltimore. Don’t let the four foot crystal chandelier fool you, they have everything for every kind of dog, and every owner’s wallet. Some items include Swarovski crystal collars and Italian fleece-lined raincoats. There is even a doggie pastry section and an organic line of clothes and toys so you will know that your dog is safe chewing on a product that is free of growth hormones and pesticides!

In 2007 the Pooch boutique was noted in the City Paper as being the Best Dog Store and in 2006 the same paper noted The Pretentious Pooch the Best Place to Treat Your Pet Like a Spoiled Brat.

The Pretentious Pooch is open Tuesday though Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pets are welcome, so bring you Poo and spoil them!

There are many other boutiques in the area. Here is a Google map of the stores in the Maryland area.

I’ll be honest, this video is a little long.  I was supposed to take Otto to the dog park today but with the weather I decided to give him a bath instead.  Hint: The last 10 seconds of the video are by far worth watching!!

So I attempted to show how I brush Otto, but he is very wiggly and would not sit still.   Do not judge me for this video!

Your Poo Tip of the Week!

Clean your Poo’s ears!

It is important to check the inside of your Poo’s ears for infections or odors.

To clean your Poo’s ears us a cotton swab with ear solution cleaner and gently clean around the inside of the ear.  Don’t push the cotton swab too far in or you will cause an irritation.  If your Poo seems to be rubbing its ears more than normal than they may need to visit their vet for special ear drops.

My Yorkie Poo also says

Ear hair plucking is not necessary for all dogs and should be done only when ear cleaning or draining of the ear is a problem. At that point it should only be a light ear hair plucking.

Petco sells many types of ear cleaner at reasonable prices.

I have never had a problem with cleaning Otto’s ears but here is a recent picture of him.  His right ear is always up and his left ear is always down!

Don’t Make This Mistake *Part Two

Impulsive adoptions/purchases

Last week I mentioned an article from the Today Show with the top most common mistakes pet owners make and the first tip was to not assume your pet is a person in fur clothing.

This weeks mistake not to make is don’t make an impulsive adoption or purchase of a pet.  Deciding on having a pet join your family is very important and requires a lot of thought and research.

The author Andrea Arden stated,

“Carefully consider the commitment of time and money, and if this particular animal’s size, age, temperament and activity level are a good match for your family.”

Pets require a lot of responsibility so it’s best to consider your options before you bring one home on a whim.

Pupforum is a great site if you are looking to adopt or rescue a dog in Maryland.

Brush Your Dog’s Teeth!

Brushing your poo’s teeth is very important, but you need to use special doggie toothpaste.  Human toothpaste is not safe for your furry friend.  Doggie toothepaste is sold at your local pet store such as PETCO.

My Yorkie Poo says to brush your poo’s teeth once a day, but to be honest that is a challenge in itself.  Otto’s vet, Dr Klomp, recommends at least once a week, which seems a little more reasonable to me and especially Otto.

Believe me, your poo will fight you when you try to stick that little toothbrush in their mouths but the more you do it the more comfortable they will be with it.

Otto dislikes it very much but as his Mom I would rather take care of it now rather than deal with more drastic issues later!

Good Luck Brushing!!

Hair cuts, baths, and brushing!

Grooming your dog, especially one with long fur, is very important. Otto’s groomer is a family friend, Jo Ann Rontanini from Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Jo Ann was the first and only groomer Otto has ever had. It is important to trust the person who is coming so close to your precious pet with very sharp scissors.

Jo Ann says it is very important to not only keep up with a regular schedule of hair cuts and baths but also brushing your dog to keep knots out of their fur. She says it’s something that can be very harmful and hurtful to your pet to let knots acquire throughout their fur.

Otto definitely is not the most well behaved at the groomer and I have even had to pick him up early because he wouldn’t sit still. To be honest, his hair cuts cost more than mine and he goes every four weeks, which is a lot more often than I do.

It is worth the money and the extra trips to New Jersey if it means he is more comfortable and taken care of.

Here is Otto just after one of his trips to the groomer!
