What is your dog scared of?

Otto hates the sound of the dishwasher but can sleep through a thunderstorm.  He will shake and pant and run around the entire cycle of the dishwasher and for a while even after its done.

I found some tips from Petcare on how to calm your dog down during a storm.  Maybe these tips can help Otto overcome his fear of the dishwasher.Desensitize the dog to the loud noise. Make thunder and other loud noises fun.

  • Desensitize the dog to the sound of loud noises. Make the time during the storm fun.
  • Put your dog in a safe place, such as an interior bathroom where it isn’t so loud.
  • Turn on the tv or play the radio.

If you try these tips and your dog is still afraid there is always medication you can get from your vet to calm their anxieties.

Want to Know What Your Pup Does While You’re Gone?

Just drop them off at Dogtopia and you can watch through live webcam feeds all day.hp-doyouknow

Dogtopia is located all over the country but the location in the Maryland area is located in Clarksville.  During Dog Daycare at Dogtopia, your pup will be placed in a play group that is appropriate for their size and temperment.

They also offer overnight stays and a dog spa which provides many services such as shampooing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning.  If you never get the opportunity to treat your pet to a stay at Dogtopia, you can always shop for them in the boutique.

At the boutique there toys, grooming supplies, food, and treats and of course — clothes to dress your best friend up in.

Hopefully Otto and I can make a trip there, but only if he’s a good boy this week.

Take Your Dog To Work Day

Take Your Dog To Work Day was first started in 1999 created by Pet Sitters International to celebrate the great companions dogs make.  June 26 2009, businesses, animal shelters, and pet-care professionals will work to raise money for shelter dogs.

This is the one and only day you can actually bring your Poo to work with you, how fun.  You must make sure your business is registered and on their website they list the top 10 things to say to convince your boss to take part:

10. The squirrels in the neighborhood deserve a break.
9. Wagging tails work great when the a/c is on the fritz.
8. With a dog as your passenger, you’ll be able to use the car pool lane.
7. It’s a great way to lick the work day blahs!
6. My dog thinks you’re grrrrrrreat!
5. Meetings end as soon as Rover starts staring at the conference room door.
4. You can blame those missing reports on one of your employees’ dogs.
3. It’s the leash you can do.
2. Finally, someone at your office will actually be working like a dog.
AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON TO TAKE YOUR DOG TO WORK…
1. Friday, June 26, is Take Your Dog To Work Day®!

I will hopefully be employed somewhere where I can take part this year!

“Wine & Wag”

It’s a little obvious that those of us, who have special pets, love them.  In addition to loving my Otto, and my fiancé of course, I also love wine.

This week the Maryland SPCA is celebrating 140 years of caring at Maryland Historical Society, located at 201 W. Monument Street in Baltimore. An exhibit will be on display from April 1 through June 28 and highlights the history of the organization and is sponsored by Bravo Health.

A “Wine and Wag” reception will be held on Friday, May 8 from 6pm to 9pm.  Tickets are $30 per person in advance and $35 at the door and can be purchased online or by calling 410-235-8826, ext. 135.

I think this is a great way to raise money and awareness and support for the Maryland SPCA.

Boarding Your Poo

mailgooglecomThis weekend I couldn’t take Otto with me to the beach so I left him with my roommate. Had she not been available to watch my little baby, I would have had to board him.

I really enjoyed having my roommate watch him because he was already comfortable in our apartment, she could call me anytime with questions, and she sent me tons of picture messages of Otto and what they were doing!

But I did do some research when I got back from my trip this weekend, just in case that situation should arise when I had no one to watch him for me and he couldn’t come.

Here is a google map of the places to board your dog. As a pup owner you have many options, and are not required to put your dog in a kennel while you are away. Places in the Maryland area range from pet spas and luxury boarding to staying at the home of someone.

Summer Products for Your Poo!

This week’s tips were about keeping your poo cool in warm weather. So I knew there had to be pup products that are designed just for this purpose and I found Dog Shade and Dog Summer Cooling Productp_7769_fs8730zs

Personally, the only product I could see myself utilizing would be the crate fan.
It is powered by a battery and attaches to almost every crate. It has two speeds and lasts up to 100 hours of use.

I think it would be very useful for driving Otto around in the summer if he is in the backseat in his crate.

It only costs $12.95 so I think for the amount of time Otto and I would be using it it would be worth the investment.

Check out some of the other products such as the dog boots and the pet fountain, maybe your poo could use a summer surprise!

Your Poo Tip of The Week!

Well it seems as though winter has left and summer has begun with out any kind of spring. My tips this week are going to be about keeping your poo’s cool in the warm weather.

  • Make sure your pup has plenty of water. This is especially important for young or small dogs because just a little time spent in the sun panting can cause them to dehydrate.
  • Try to keep your poo in the shade as much as possible when outside. The temperature may not be too hot but the sun on their coats can create a lot of heat.
  • Homemade frozen dog treats! They are easy enough to make by placing small pieces of fruit in an ice cube tray and freezing, can definitely make an sweltering day better for your Poo.
  • Putting sunscreen on your pups nose, especially if it’s a light color can help prevent their nose from getting a burn!

Otto is more of an indoor dog, but when it is this warm out and he goes out he needs a lot of water. Which then causes him to go have to go out more, so be aware of how much water they are taking in and putting out to keep them healthy.

While home over spring break I taught Otto how to run on a treadmill.

It is important for Poo’s to get enough exercise and there is a facility in Crownsville, MD called the Canine Fitness Center that offers swimming and other fun ways to keep your pup in good health. Other services include acupuncture, massages for your dog, and an underwater treadmill! I have never heard of this kind of exercise for dogs but I guess there is everything for everyone these days.

According to Country Pups, “The Yorkie Poo does not require a lot of exercise. Most of its exercise requirements can be met through indoor activity, but Yorkie Poos love going on walks with their owner and regular play time outdoors, and have enough stamina to come alongside for a longer jog.”

Otto loves to go on walks, especially when he is in New Jersey and can go with my parents two labs. He gets very tired afterward and is a great way to have him expend some energy.

Don’t Make This Mistake*Part Four

mms1 My Poo can hear the sound of M&Ms hitting the floor from miles away, he can sense when your hand reaches into the bag. If you asked Otto what his favorite food might be, granted he could talk, he would say M&Ms. So why does my Poo know what those candy coated chocolates are? My roommate. I really shouldn’t be calling her out so much on here (Part Three), but she is a huge helper with taking care of Otto so her mistakes are mine as well.

Otto will beg for anything close to resembling food, he doesn’t care what is it, he wants it. He’s been infamous for stealing underwear and bringing it out into the living, one shoe of each pair – mostly left feet, and even the bottle caps off water bottles so check your possessions at the door.

Anyway, Otto is somewhat of a circus dog. He can balance up on his back two legs for a long time, an abnormally long time and in our apartment there is always a bowl of M&Ms on the table. It was easy for Otto to do a trick such as balancing or jumping from the back of the couch to the front, he’s got a good vertical too, and be rewarded with the closest treat, an M&M.

CHOCOLATE IS TERRIBLE FOR DOGS! Large or small. According to the Dog Owners Digest, “Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle.”

Do not ever feed your pup or Poo chocolate.  I know how hard it is to resist his little beady eyes and button nose but it can be lethal.
